VZWraps fabric gift bags are an eco-friendly alternative to traditional wrapping paper, paper that often can’t be recycled because it is dyed or laminated, contains non-paper additives, or is too thin to have good-quality fibers. Between Thanksgiving Day and New Year’s Day, Americans throw away 25% more trash than usual, about a million extra tons each week. According to Vanderbilt University’s Holiday Greening Guide, half of the paper America consumes is used to wrap and decorate consumer products. VZWraps strives to reduce trash by providing a reusable alternative with our fabric gift bags and to make environmentally-responsible choices in all aspects of the business. It’s not always the easiest or cheapest option, but we’re committed to looking for green alternatives wherever we can.
Sewn locally in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the bag sizes are based on no-waste cutting, so that all the fabric is used leaving minimal scraps behind. The bags are made from 100% cotton, and we are adding more gift bags made from organic, GOTS-certified cotton as we find suitable fabrics. We’re always on the look out for fabrics made here in the USA. For years, we’ve used either eco-grosgrain ribbon, made from 100% recycled plastic bottles, or eco-satin ribbon, made from 100% post-consumer recycled polyester, as often as possible. Unfortunately, those ribbons are no-longer made, but we bought up as much as we could and will use it until we run out. All our ribbon, whether recycled or traditional, is made in the USA.
We are shipping fabric, so it needs to be protected from the elements. First your bags are wrapped in tissue paper made from 100% recycled paper. Then it goes into our Eco-Enclose biodegradable, reusable (two sealing strips), USA-made envelopes. Larger orders ship in a USPS Priority Mail box which is Cradle-to-Cradle certified, a reused shipping box, or a new box made from recycled materials. Because the boxes are not water resistant, your bags may be placed inside a plastic bag. Rest assured that plastic bag is being reused. We save bags from fabric bolts, ribbon shipments, and everything else to reuse when we need them!
For bags that are shipped directly to customers, the only packaging used is a paper clip. Why? To neatly secure the ribbon so it doesn’t get tangled or wrinkled during shipping. Our bags that are sold on Amazon must be placed inside a clear bag. Can you imagine loose bags in Amazon’s ginormous warehouses? So again we turned to Eco-Enclose for bags made here in the US from 100% recycled content.
